March 7 – Two Brighton fans have been stabbed in Rome ahead of the Seagull’s Europa League fixture versus AS Roma this evening.
The fans, aged 28 and 29, were mugged by a masked gang but luckily escaped into a nearby shop carrying nasty leg wounds. They were then taken to different hospitals for non-life threatening stab injuries just after midnight Thursday.
During the incident, both fans allegedly had their wallets and documents stolen.
In response, Italian Police have said 1,000 officers will be deployed at the match.
Brighton issued a warning to fans ahead of Thursday’s last 16 tie, which will see two of the tournament outside favourites face off much earlier than either anticipated.
A club spokesperson said: “Street crime, including pickpocketing, can take place in Rome. Be vigilant, take sensible precautions and have valid travel insurance.”
Brighton fans attending the game are being advised to use a free shuttle service to get to and from the Stadio Olimpico.
Liaison officers and the British Consulate have contacted the club about the incident. Sussex Police said their dedicated football officer “is in Rome to work alongside our Italian counterparts and European partner agencies.”
Around 3,500 Brighton supporters have travelled to Rome for the first leg of the round of 16 tie.
