LaLiga passes 10m subs on YouTube

March 25 – La Liga EA Sports has become the first football league to reach 10 million subscribers on YouTube, collecting the prestigious diamond play button trophy to mark the milestone.

The channel has accumulated over 3 billion views since its introduction in 2012 through posting a variety of content, including match highlights, nostalgic compilations of past greats and specific montages for players in good form – a blend of current news and evergreen content.

Serie A’s YouTube channel is hot on LaLiga’s tail with 9.28 million subscribers and will surely be the next football league to pick up the diamond play button

In contrast, the Premier League has just over 6 million subscribers, but most of its content is funnelled through a secondary page managed by Sky Sports, which has 4.5 million subscribers.

Alfredo Bermejo, LALIGA’s Director of Digital Strategy, said: “This milestone is an example of the constant work to continuously adapt to the changes taking place in our industry, changing content and creating new forms of entertainment to continue providing our fans with what they demand from us. We are proud to be the first football league to achieve an achievement like this and it spurs us on to continue working along the same lines.”

LaLiga’s YouTube channel is a core part of its digital ecosystem and an important strategy for its internationalisation process. The highest concentration of subscribers outside of Spain come from Indonesia, Mexico, India and the US.

Cristina Delgado, Head of Sports and News at YouTube in Spain and Portugal, finalised: “LALIGA has been an example of innovation and embracing digitalisation. Both Grup Mediapro and LaLiga opted to create an exclusive YouTube channel to reach their global audiences, and their results position it as the top football league on YouTube.”
