Houston’s big signing María Sánchez sold to San Diego as NWSL transfer window closes

April 23 – Mexico forward María Sánchez, who signed a $1.5 million contract for Houston Dass in the NWSL, is already on the move, just five games into the season.

Sanchez is transferring to the San Diego Wave for $500,000 (her contract is held centrally by the NWSL). It is the largest transfer between NWSL clubs in the league’s history.

The deal was confirmed just before last Friday’s NWSL transfer deadline day.

Sánchez, who was a free agent when she signed for the Dash in a three-year deal, requested a transfer after just four months.

Sánchez was a key player for Mexico at the inaugural W Gold Cup in February, playing in Mexico’s landmark 1-0 group win over the US, the first time Mexico’s women have beaten the US in a major competition.

The Dash will receive $300,000 in transfer funds and $200,000 in allocation money. While Sánchez is on the way out, standout Brazilian centreback Tarciane, is on her way to Houston.

Other transfer activity saw Angel City FC trade center-back Paige Nielsen to the Dash in exchange for $50,000 in allocation money and $50,000 in transfer fees.

Goalkeeper Emily Alvardo also left the Dash to go to the Portland Thorns in exchange for $35,000 in allocation money.

Angel City was also active as the deadline approached, trading midfielder and former France captain Amandine Henry to expansion side Utah Royals FC for $75,000 in allocation money.
