Brazilian U-20 women’s player fails dope test but contaminated beef blamed

November 19 – Corinthians have sidelined player Gi Fernandes after she failed a doping test during the U-20 Women’s World Cup.

TNT Sports and Globo have reported that the 19-year-old athlete tested positive for Boldenone, an anabolic substance derived from testosterone during the tournament. It is suspected that the contamination came from eating contaminated beef.

Last weekend, she was not in the matchday squad for the first leg of the final of the Paulista championship between Corinthians and Palmeiras. She first played for Santos before moving to the Sao Paulo giants.

At the U-20 tournament, she started in all five of Brazil’s matches, including the 1-0 quarter-final defeat to eventual champions North Korea.

In a statement, Corinthians said: “Sport Club Corinthians Paulista informs that it was notified last week about the positive result in an anti-doping test carried out by athlete Gi Fernandes during the U-20 Women’s World Cup, in Colombia, between August and September.”

“Complying with all protocols, the club promptly removed the athlete from its activities since she is preventively suspended while the sample analysis process is ongoing. The investigation process of the case is in the counter-testing phase of the sample.”
