May 2 – Qatar have named Julen Lopetegui, the former head coach of Real Madrid and the Spanish national team, as their new manager, the QFA confirmed on Thursday.
The 58-year-old has signed a deal that will keep him in charge through to the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, where the reigning champions will be chasing a third straight continental crown. Lopetegui’s debut on the touchline will come on June 5 in a home fixture against Iran, followed by a trip to Uzbekistan on June 10.
“Ready for a new chapter. Welcome Lopetegui,” the Qatar Football Association posted on social media. “We’re excited to embark on this journey together.”
He takes over from compatriot Luis García, who had only been in the role since December. García’s departure was also announced on Thursday.
“The QFA extends its deepest appreciation to Mr García for his professionalism and dedication throughout his time with the team,” the federation added.
Qatar’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup via direct qualification are already over after a string of poor results left them fourth in their group. However, a play-off route remains open for the 2022 World Cup hosts.
Lopetegui’s most recent stints were in the English Premier League, with Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United. His time at West Ham ended in January when he was dismissed following a run of disappointing results.
