May 15 – Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has joined the ownership group of Chelsea Women, confirming a £20 million investment that secures him a 10% stake in the reigning Women’s Super League champions.
The American entrepreneur, who is also the husband of tennis great Serena Williams, announced the move on Wednesday, marking a bold new step in his growing commitment to women’s sport. “I’ve bet big on women’s sports before – and I’m doing it again,” he posted on LinkedIn. “I’m honoured for the chance to help this iconic club become every American’s favourite WSL team and much, much more.”
While Chelsea have yet to issue a formal statement, Ohanian’s comments follow reports in The Times of the deal’s valuation, which places Chelsea Women at £200 million — the same figure used last June when the women’s arm of the club was transferred to BlueCo 22 Midco Ltd, a sister company to Chelsea’s ownership group.
That move was understood to be part of efforts to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules by ringfencing the women’s operation financially.
Ohanian, who previously co-founded Angel City FC in the NWSL, said his decision to join Chelsea’s board was motivated by a desire to match elite performance with elite backing. “These players are rewriting the game,” he wrote. “Undefeated season. Eyes on the treble. But this isn’t just about winning titles. It’s about finally matching their talent with the resources, visibility and respect they deserve.”
His arrival comes as Sonia Bompastor’s side prepare to chase a domestic treble in Sunday’s Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley against Manchester United, having already wrapped up the league title and League Cup.
Ohanian also singled out Chelsea Women’s CEO Aki Mandhar for praise, citing her “integrity and focus on excellence” as a key factor in his decision. “This was a ‘hell yes’-type investment,” he added.
The move strengthens Chelsea’s growing global profile in women’s football and places them in the spotlight of a U.S. market that Ohanian has helped energise through his visibility and investment. His influence — commercial, cultural and digital — could be transformative for a club already setting the standard on the pitch.
