May 15 – Resting serenely on the banks of the River Thames, Craven Cottage – London’s oldest football stadium – has completed its magnificent transformation with the full opening of The Riverside Stand.
While the new stand has been partially hosting supporters, the official unveiling of the Sky Deck’s rooftop marks the complete debut of The Riverside Stand experience.
Designed to celebrate both the heritage of Craven Cottage and its spectacular riverfront setting, the stand introduces 2,303 premium seats across layered terraces, open-air balconies, and glass-fronted lounges.
With seating tiers angled at a steep 33 degrees – just shy of the UK’s maximum permitted 35 degrees – and the front row positioned a mere 3.5 meters from the pitch, the stand offers an intimate viewing experience.
Architecturally, the design draws inspiration from the traditional boathouses of the Thames. A sweeping cantilevered roof, bronze-colored soffit, and modular light-touch design complement the stand’s impressive 30-metre height, ensuring it remains a landmark visible from across the river.
Alistair Mackintosh, Chief Executive Officer of Fulham FC, said: “Our vision for Fulham has always been about honouring tradition while building a future our supporters can be proud of.
“The Riverside Stand is a symbol of that ambition – a space where community, elegance, and world-class sport come together on the banks of the Thames. By blending modern amenities with the charm that defines our club, we’re immensely proud to have created a destination that resonates with both lifelong fans and new visitors alike.”
Philip Johnson, Senior Principal and Lead Architect at Populous, said: “Our aim with the Riverside Stand was to design a structure that feels both timeless and rooted in its riverside context. This isn’t just about creating more seating – it’s about opening up this part of London, enhancing the heritage of Craven Cottage, and giving something back to the community.”
Stuart Forbes, Owner of Stuart Forbes Associates and Lead Designers, added: “It’s now very exciting to see the completion of the project and our visions turning into reality. I am confident the new Riverside Stand will make an outstanding contribution to both fans and local London residents and families wishing to enjoy a range of hospitality experiences in a riverside setting.”
Craven Cottage’s story began in 1780 when a cottage was built in the woods and named after William Craven, the 6th Baron Craven.
The stadium’s most distinctive feature – the red-brick Cottage Pavilion in the corner – was designed by renowned football stadium architect Archibald Leitch and constructed in 1905. This iconic structure remains the only surviving example of his original work and is now a Grade II listed building.
The stadium’s riverside setting has long been one of football’s most picturesque locations, with fans able to walk along the Thames before matches.
The new £350 million Riverside Stand represents the most significant development in the ground’s 127-year history, increasing capacity to over 29,000 while maintaining the unique character that has made Craven Cottage a beloved landmark in London football.
