June 4 – Inter Milan and Simeone Inzaghi have parted ways after the Italian club’s 5-0 defeat in the final of the Champions League, the club has confirmed.
Following the loss, the Italian manager had remained tight-lipped about his future, but on Tuesday, the club and Inzaghi announced that they would no longer work together, ending a four-year relationship.
“The time has come for me to say goodbye to this club after a four-year journey, during which I gave everything,” said Inzaghi.
“I want to dedicate one last word to the millions of fans who cheered me on, cried and suffered in difficult moments and laughed and celebrated in the six triumphs we experienced together. I will never forget you.”
The Champions League final should have served as both the highlight and saving grace of Inter’s season, but instead turned into humiliation as Paris Saint-Germain’s youngsters exposed the veterans of Inter in a 5-0 rout, a record-breaking scoreline in the final of the European Cup. The result left Inter without a trophy this season.
In a matter of weeks, Inzaghi’s team squandered the opportunity of winning a treble. They lost the title by a single point to Napoli and the Italian Cup to crosstown rivals AC Milan in a 4-1 defeat.
In a statement, Inter wrote: “Inzaghi is one of the head coaches with the most appearances in the dugout for the Nerazzurri, alongside some other illustrious names: Herrera, Mancini, Trapattoni and Mourinho. Just like the rest of this exclusive group, Inzaghi made a significant contribution in adding to Inter’s trophy cabinet and will forever be remembered as the coach who took us to our Second Star.”
Inzaghi led Inter to the Serie A title in 2024 as well as two Italian Cup victories in 2022 and 2023, but Europe’s premier club competition eluded him. In 2023, Manchester City defeated the Italian club in the Champions League final 1-0.
“I want to thank Simone Inzaghi for his hard work, passion, and also sincerity in today’s meeting, which has yielded the mutual decision to part ways. Only when you have fought together every day to achieve success can you have an open and honest dialogue, such as we have had today,” said Inter chairman Giuseppe Marotta.”
Inzaghi has been linked to a role at Saudi club Al-Hilal, a participant in the expanded Club World Cup.
