Premier League closed season with average capacity attendances of  98.35%

June 11 – The final weekend of the Premier League season saw an average stadium capacity of 98.35% across all ten fixtures – a figure that, while still robust by European standards, represents a slight and unexpected dip from the penultimate round of matches.

Matchweek 37 had posted a league-wide average of 98.725% – the second-highest of the season, trailing only the opening round’s 98.848%. In contrast, the final matchday’s attendance figures came in noticeably softer, with no single fixture acting as a major outlier to skew the data.

Liverpool’s Anfield recorded 98.54% capacity as Arne Slot marked his first trophy with the club, but it was notable that thousands of supporters chose to gather outside the ground rather than take seats inside. It was a celebratory atmosphere that didn’t fully translate into full terraces.

Only three clubs made it into the prestigious ‘99% Club’ in the final round – Manchester United and Nottingham Forest both posted 99.37%, while Newcastle United led the way at 99.84%.

Old Trafford claimed the highest single-match attendance of the weekend at 73,839 as Manchester United signed off a more-than patchy campaign with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa – a result that buried Villa’s Champions League aspirations and offered the home faithful a rare moment of optimism heading into the summer, where changes will be made.

The two top performers across the 2024/25 season were Newcastle United and West Ham United, each averaging above 99.6% on every occasion.

The overall season average across all 20 teams was marked at 97.92% – brought down by serial offenders Fulham and Southampton, who both averaged less than 97% capacity throughout the season. Fulham have the most expensive season ticket in the league (over £3,000) and Southampton were doomed for relegation very early into the season – both factors likely impacting matchday attendance.

Despite the slight downturn in the final round, the Premier League’s season-long stadium occupancy remains the highest among the major European leagues, reinforcing the continued strength of the matchday product in England.
