RefCam scores an early goal with Dominik Szoboszlai strike

September 3 – Season-defining goals rarely come in the first few weeks of the season however, Liverpool’s winner against Arsenal, scored by Dominik Szoboszlai, carries special significance as it was captured by the RefCam.

The sizzling free-kick from 35 yards out was captured directly from match referee Chris Kavanagh’s camera, showing the full potential of this technology.

The timeline of the RefCam has been one of slow and steady development and has been developed gradually over the past 18 months:

May 2024: Referee Jarred Gillett wore a head-mounted RefCam during Crystal Palace vs. Manchester United, with footage later released for educational and promotional purposes.

Summer 2025: RefCam was tested during the Premier League Summer Series in the US, using chest-mounted cameras in selected pre-season matches.

August 2025: Official trials began in live Premier League fixtures, with Sky Sports and TNT Sports integrating RefCam footage into broadcasts. The technology was also explored as a potential resource for VAR.

25 August 2025: RefCam made its competitive debut in Newcastle vs. Liverpool, giving fans their first real-time look through the referee’s perspective.

While some of the footage can look jerky and not as clean as traditional footage, the Szoboszlai moment captured an image that traditional cameras could only hope to produce. The unique angle provided a perspective that only someone on the field of play could previously view.

For broadcasters, RefCam gives them another tool in their ever-growing arsenal to tell stories and provide viewers with those viral “can’t miss moments”.
