October 8 – Arsenal are the latest Premier League club to consider a stadium expansion. The Gunners are exploring ways to increase the Emirates Stadium’s 60,700 capacity to around 70,000, a development that would restore its claim as London’s largest football ground and tweak the noses of their North London rivals, Spurs, and the futuristic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
While the Emirates Stadium is rightly considered a venue fit for the elite, the Premier League is in the midst of a stadium renaissance, with Liverpool’s recent redevelopment of Anfield and Manchester City’s ongoing expansion of the Etihad, stadiums are assets that must be continually upgraded to keep the revenues flowing.
At Arsenal, discussions are being led by the Kroenke Sports & Entertainment group (KSE), the club’s American owners, who know a thing or two about stadiums, having built and financed SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, widely considered to be one of the best, if not the best venue in the world
KSE has been examining subtle modifications to the stands’ gradient, which could accommodate several thousand additional seats or a full-scale project that might require the team to temporarily relocate, possibly to Wembley, a move that Spurs proved could work before they moved into their new stadium.
Co-chair Josh Kroenke confirmed that “internal conversations are starting to occur,” describing the proposal as “not an easy renovation, but we see the possibilities of what’s there.”
With more than 100,000 fans on the waiting list for season tickets and matchday revenues lagging behind their rivals, Arsenal know expansion is a must if they are to keep up with their rivals.
The project is expected to cost several hundred million pounds and would impact most areas of the stadium.
With a capacity of 60,704, Arsenal has the fifth-largest stadium among English football clubs.
Manchester United’s Old Trafford, itself the subject of redevelopment plans, is the biggest ground with a capacity of 74,879, while Tottenham’s home is second (62,850), West Ham (62,500) third, and Liverpool (61,276) fourth.
