Bellingham stars, Mbappé scores, and Vini has a strop

October 27 – Real Madrid defeated FC Barcelona 2-1 in Sunday’s El Clasico, with first-half goals from Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham to go five points clear at the top of La Liga.

In a compelling match at the Bernabeu, French striker Kylian Mbappé handed the hosts the lead after a Jude Bellingham assist. Fermin Lopez cancelled out Madrid’s lead, but Bellingham tapped home to get a winner just before half-time. It was a fine display by the Englishman, whose form was a reminder of his 23-goal campaign in the 2023-24 season.

“He did well against Juve, today and even at Getafe,” said Madrid manager Xabi Alonso at a news conference. “He’s had three very good games and we knew that before the last break, he needed minutes to get going and get a feel for things. He’s done better than expected after the break. He’s a player who’s very much about feeling, transmitting and connecting. He’s played some very good games.”

Madrid had a better shape and were better in every department than their opponents. After the break, Alonso took off Brazilian star Vinicius Junior, who threw a tantrum.

“I’m taking away a lot of positives from Vini Jr.’s performance and I don’t want to lose sight of what’s important. He contributed a lot. All coaches know that there are different personalities,” said Alonso.

His side held on to win and build a five-point lead at the top of the table.

VAR also took centre stage at the Bernabéu, cancelling a penalty given for Yamal’s challenge on Vinícius Júnior and denying Kylian Mbappé a stunning 20-yard volley for a marginal offside.

In the 10th minute of stoppage time, Pedri was dismissed following a foul on Aurelien Tchouameni. His sending off prompted altercations and a red card for Madrid’s unused substitute, Andriy Lunin.

“These clashes have always happened and are a consequence of the desire to win. There’s no need to be alarmed by a clash that is healthy, respectful and good-natured. It was the tension of an important match and a close result,” said Alonso.
