October 31 – England captain Harry Kane, scored twice as Bayern Munich continued their perfect start to the season with a 4-1 win over Cologne in the DFB Pokal, setting a new European record for the most consecutive victories to open a campaign. Fourteen games played, 14 wins.
In just his second season at Bayern, former Burnley coach Vincent Kompany has overseen a cultural revolution, injecting energy and discipline into a squad that had grown complacent.
“The connection between Kompany’s tactical structure and Kane’s clinical edge is what makes Bayern look unstoppable right now,” said one German pundit this week, and it’s hard to disagree. The former Spurs man can’t stop scoring, and his influence runs deep. He’s become Bayern’s emotional anchor and the leader around whom everything revolves.
This latest win saw Bayern overtake Fabio Capello’s iconic AC Milan side of 1992-93, who won 13 straight to open their season.
The next two games will test the record start, though, as Bayer Leverkusen, one of their closest domestic challengers, followed by the Kings of Europe, Paris Saint-Germain, in the UEFA Champions League, will be aiming to end the run.
