February 6 – Konami’s decision to bring eFootball to Nintendo’s next-generation console is a quietly significant moment for football gaming.
Set to launch this summer on the Switch 2, eFootball Kick-Off will be the franchise’s first appearance on a Nintendo platform. With eFootball opting for a free-to-play approach, unlike EA Sports FC’s annual title model, the move is an opportunity for Konami to grow its player base – particularly with younger audiences.
Football gaming has historically been dominated by high-powered consoles and online-first platforms, leaving Nintendo’s vast install base largely untouched.
The Switch console, released in 2017, changed that, proving there is significant appetite for sports and competitive titles in a more accessible, portable format.
Konami’s long-standing shift from rival to trusted partner in Nintendo’s ecosystem has positioned it to capitalise on that audience with a free-to-play football product on a console often overlooked by video game makers in favour of PlayStation or Xbox, despite its massive player-base.
A Switch-exclusive entry potentially also widens the esports funnel, introducing competitive football gaming to players who might never engage with PC or console-based esports ecosystems. In turn, that opens the door for new opportunities for grassroots tournaments, brand partnerships and federation-led initiatives targeting youth participation.
