October 2 – PSG’s duo of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar are still the most valuable players in the world at €225 million and €196 million, but the record breaking summer transfer window has thrown some new names into the pot with Arsenal’s new winger Nicolas Pépé topping a ranking of players who have increased their market value.
The data, drawn from the KPMG Football Benchmark Player Valuation Tool which uses its own algorithm to calculate player market value, tracks more than 4,800 players from 12 different leagues.
Pépé, who transferred from Lille to Arsenal for £72 million, has seen his value rise in the ranking by €25 million to €75 million, despite a less than impressive start at his new club.
Second in the ranking is Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham who saw his value rise €20 million to €43 million. With Chelsea under a transfer ban and manager Frank Lampard giving young players plenty of playing opportunity, the club can expect to see the value of its playing stock rise significantly.
The Football Benchmark report shows the top six players increasing values by almost €20 million each. “Four of the top 10 players are under 21 years of age, the youngest one being Italian forward Kean (19), who is 7th in our ranking,” say the report authors.
“Regarding the top 10 players with the highest increase in their market value, the English Premier League is represented by the most players (7), followed by the Spanish LaLiga (2) and the Italian Serie A (just one). Two of the top 10 players are English, French and Spanish, respectively – also proof of the efficiency of the academy infrastructures nurturing young talents in these countries,” they continue.
Barcelona signing Antoine Griezmann is the only player to appear in both the increasing value ranking (+€17 million) and the top 10 by absolute value (€131 million). Along with Eden Hazard, ranked fourth at €163 million, he is the only player in the list to have transferred in the summer window.
