Sancho and Sessegnon head global ranking of ‘experienced’ young players

October 17 – Two English players top an ‘experience’ ranking of young players. Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho (pictured) and Tottenham’s Ryan Sessegnon lead the way in a top 20 that has ten young players coming from Europe’s Big 5 leagues and four of them from England’s Premier League.

The “experience capital” calculation by the CIES Football Observatory creates a ranking based on the amount of pitch time players are getting and the standard of the league they are playing in.

“For players born in 2000, the Englishman Jadon Sancho (ranking score of 52)  outranks his countryman Ryan Sessegnon (32)  and the Dutchman Kik Pierie (AFC Ajax – 31). The second highest figure (25) outside of the big-5 European leagues was measured for the Danish Mikkel Damsgaard (Nordsjaelland), while that for footballers playing outside of Europe was recorded for the Venezuelan Cristian Casséres (New York Red Bulls -20).”

“Rodrygo Goes (Real Madrid – 23) heads the table for players born in or after 2001. The Brazilian prodigy ranks in the top 10 also by considering footballers born in 2000: 8th. The Paraguayan Fernando Cardozo (Boavista) is the second most experienced U19 player, while at third position is a 2002-born footballer: Adam Hložek (Sparta Praha). The youngest player in the lists is the 16-year-old midfielder Daniel Leyva (Seattle Sounders & Tacoma Defiance).”
