August 7 – English Premier League clubs have voted against continuing to allow five substitutions to be used per league game for the 2020-21 season.
Because of the effects of Covid-19 and fixture congestion caused by a three-month delay, football’s law-making body allowed clubs to increase the number of substitutes from three to five to complete the last campaign.
The International FA Board said teams could maintain the new rule next season, but left it up to individual federations and leagues to decide.
England won’t be one of them, reverting back to using three substitutes, with a maximum of seven on the bench.
Many clubs apparently made the point that using five subs was unfairly benefiting the top teams who have with larger squads although some reports said the vote was unanimous.
The Premier League added that clubs had also agreed to implement a significant change to VAR with increased use of pitch-side monitors, long overdue, by the on-field referee.
