March 24 – Real Madrid have received a boost with the news they will not be forced to play the ‘home’ leg of their upcoming Champions League quarter-final tie against Liverpool on neutral ground.
Due to ongoing travel restrictions a number of games in both the Champions League and Europa League have had to be moved to other cities and countries, with the likes of Budapest and Athens playing host.
But it now looks like Real will be able to host Liverpool in Spain, not at the Bernabeu which is being expanded, but at the small, 6,000-capacity Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano stadium.
The news means the game won’t have to be played in Budapest, as had been proposed and Real will hope that having a proper home advantage before their trip to Liverpool on April 14 for the second leg will give them a crucial advantage.
Spain is reported to be easing travel restrictions from the UK after March 30, thereby allowing the match to take place as planned. This also means Granada’s Europa League game against Manchester United can take place in Spain.
