Millwall owner John Berylson dies in US car crash

July 7 – John Berylson (pictured), owner and chairman of English Football League side Millwall, has died aged 70 following a fatal car accident in the United States.

His death was announced by the tier-2 Championship team, which said Berylson presided over some of the greatest moments in Millwall’s history since first becoming involved with the club in 2006.

Team captain Shaun Hutchinson described the American businessman as “an example on the perfect way to run a football club.”

“He really did love the club. He had so much time for every single person whether it be fans or the players, shook everyone’s hand, came across and individually spoke to every single player before every game,” Hutchinson said in a video posted to Twitter by the team.

Police said the crash occurred in Falmouth, about 80 miles south of Boston. Berylson was the only occupant and the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

“John was, without any doubt whatsoever, the best club owner I have ever worked with, and I would argue strongly that he was the best chairman of any club in this country,” said Millwall CEO Steve Kavanagh said. “I feel so desperately sad for John’s family and our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
