June 22 – On the sidelines of the FIFA summit in Miami, CBF president Samir Xaud has pitched his country to stage the 2029 Club World Cup.

The United States is hosting the first edition of the 32-team tournament, the pet project of FIFA boss Gianni Infantino with Brazilian clubs taking centre stage and Xaud, elected last month to succeed Ednaldo Rodrigues, has lined up Brazil as a host of the 2029 finals.

In an interview with Globo, he said: “I talked about my goals as head of the CBF and said that we want to be closer to FIFA. I praised the event and the level of Brazilian clubs and, finally, I made the country available to host the next World Cup. He (Infantino) was very happy and said that it was totally possible. Now we are going to work to make it happen. It will be a great goal.”

Following Rodrigues’s acrimonious exit from the game, Xaud is seeking to reset the relationship between FIFA and the CBF. The Brazilians lost their place on the FIFA Council to Argentina’s Claudio Tapia.

Brazil is not the first country to express interest in staging the tournament that this year serves as a dress rehearsal for next year’s World Cup but above all as FIFA’s attempted land grab of the club game and its commercial rights. Morocco has previously said they want to stage the tournament together with 2030 World Cup co-hosts Spain and Portugal. Following its decision to not bid for the 2034 World Cup, Australia also confirmed interest in organising the tournament.

FIFA has not yet revealed details about a bidding process for the 2029 Club World Cup.
