Al Nassr hand Ronaldo £492m 2-year deal

June 27 – Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a record-breaking new two-year contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, worth a staggering £492 million in basic salary, making it the most lucrative deal in sports history, according to reports.

The Portuguese star, now 40, will reportedly earn an eye-watering £488,000 per day, taking him well past his 42nd birthday. On top of the base pay, he will receive a £24.5 million signing bonus, rising to £38 million if he stays for the second year.

But the financial incentives go far beyond salary. According to reports, Ronaldo has been granted a 15% ownership stake in Al-Nassr, currently valued at £33 million, as well as performance bonuses for winning the Saudi Pro League and securing the Golden Boot. His total potential earnings could exceed £500 million over the duration of the contract.

Ronaldo is also set to become a “dream ambassador” for Saudi Arabia—an undefined but potentially lucrative role that aligns with the kingdom’s broader sports ambitions. Sponsorship deals linked to this role could reportedly bring in an additional £60 million.

The deal reflects Al-Nassr’s determination to retain their star asset amid speculation he could leave after a second trophyless season. A cryptic social media post from Ronaldo in April stating “this chapter is over” had fuelled rumours of a potential departure, possibly even to a Club World Cup contender.

However, Ronaldo confirmed his commitment this week, posting: “A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let’s make history together.”

Since joining Al-Nassr in late 2022, Ronaldo has scored 99 goals in 111 appearances, including 35 goals in 41 matches last season, finishing as the Saudi Pro League’s top scorer for the second year in a row. His career tally now stands at 938 goals, edging him closer to his stated goal of reaching 1,000 career goals.

The announcement of Ronaldo’s record deal coincided with the departure of head coach Stefano Pioli—the fourth manager to leave Al-Nassr since Ronaldo’s arrival, underscoring the high-stakes environment surrounding the Saudi club’s marquee investment.
