UEFA launches joint study into impact of increased player workload

June 29 – With the Club World Cup now in the last 16 stages and European clubs dominating, UEFA, supported by the European Club Association, European Leagues and FIFPRO Europe, has launched a “scientific and data-driven” study into player workload and welfare.

Multiple players, coaches and European clubs have complained that expanded international competitions are pushing their players beyond safe limits. This study will be the first from football’s stakeholders to attempt to define what that limit is quantitively.

The study will begin by defining the concept of ‘load’ in elite European men’s and women’s football, as well as understanding its associated impact where needed.

“This initiative from UEFA forms a central component, alongside focussed engagement through other platforms, of the joint commitment by UEFA, the European Club Association, European Leagues and FIFPRO Europe to safeguard the game and players’ welfare,” said UEFA.

UEFA said players, coaches, medical staff and other relevant groups will contribute to an assessment of associated ‘load’ factors, including different types of injuries, performance levels, and player welfare.

The study will analyse historical data, assessing regulatory and calendar changes, as well as technical and performance trends over time which may have had an impact on player injuries and mental welfare.

“Peer-reviewed scientific papers and practical recommendations will be produced, offering guidance to those responsible for decision-making in competition areas and in developing policies able to mitigate the influences of different aspects of load,” said UEFA.

No timeline was given for the completion of the study.
