Vasco thrashing leaves Santos in turmoil as Xavier is sacked and Neymar tears-up

August 18 – Santos have dismissed manager Cleber Xavier following a historic 6-0 defeat against Vasco da Gama that left star player Neymar in tears.

It was a dramatic end to Xavier’s four-month spell at Santos, his first role as a head coach after he served for many years as Tite’s assistant.

Former Liverpool striker Philippe Coutinho, who signed for Vasco da Gama this summer, scored twice after Lucas Piton opened for Vasco. David Correa De Fonseca, Rayan and Danilo Neves wrapped the scoreline that sealed Xavier’s fate.

In May, Xavier arrived at the Vila Belmiro to steer the club away from the relegation places and, while Santos hovered just above the danger zone, pressure had mounted on the manager. Xavier departs the clubs following 15 matches, with five wins, four draws and six defeats.  In a brief statement, Santos thanked Xavier for his services and wished him well in his future career.

Fans had repeatedly expressed their dissatisfaction and their protests culminated on Sunday when they turned their backs on the team. Left in tears, Neymar had to be consoled by a member of the backroom staff.

“I’m ashamed. I’m totally disappointed with our performance. The fans have every right to protest, obviously without using violence … But if they want to curse and insult, they’re in their right,” said Neymar.

He added: “I’ve never experienced this in my life.”

Brazilian media report that Jorge Sampaoli is the frontrunner to succeed Xavier. He led Santos to the runners-up position in the 2019 Brasileirao. In 15th, Santos have 21 points. At the end of the season, the last four clubs in the 20-team league table are relegated.
