Grimsby survive late penalty scare over ineligible player

September 3 – Grimsby Town have been fined £20,000 by the English Football League (EFL) after fielding an ineligible player, Clarke Oduor, during their dramatic Carabao Cup upset against Manchester United last week. The Mariners eventually knocked out Rubin Amorin’s Red Devils 12–11 on penalties, after surrendering a 2–0 lead in normal time.

The breach centred on Oduor, who was introduced as a 73rd-minute substitute. His player registration had been lodged just one minute late on the day of the match at 12.01pm, missing the strict noon deadline imposed for the competition.

Despite the infringement, the EFL opted against expulsion or a replay, instead issuing a financial penalty of £20,000  with £10,000 suspended until the end of the season. Officials said Grimsby had self-reported the mistake the day after the game and stressed that there was no intent to mislead.

The decision rankled some supporters within the United ecosystem as Barnsley were thrown out of the FA Cup in 2023 for a similar offence when they fielded an ineligible player against Horsham.

The EFL explained the ruling was made “in line with precedent” after a full review, concluding that the club’s non-compliance was administrative rather than deliberate.

The governing body has closed the matter, meaning Grimsby march on while United are left to pick up the pieces of one of their most humiliating defeats in club history.
