September 15 – USA and Racing Louisville midfielder Savannah DeMelo is “stable and alert” after she collapsed during her club’s match in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) on Sunday.
DeMelo required medical treatment before she was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. The emergency occurred in the first half of stoppage time at Lumen Field where Louisville played the hosts Seattle Reign on Sunday.
Initially DeMelo just sat down and was attended to by a teammate. The referee called medical staff to check her out. Several seconds later she appeared to faint.
The game was abandoned.
A Racing Louisville statement, posted on X, read: “Tonight’s Racing Louisville game at Seattle Reign FC has been abandoned following a medical emergency involving Racing midfielder Savannah DeMelo.
“Savannah, who received immediate on-field care from medical personnel, is stable and alert.
“She was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. The remainder of the game will be rescheduled for a further date, and further updates will be provided as appropriate.”
Earlier this year, DeMelo said she had been diagnosed with Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism. The midfielder has won seven caps for the US women’s national team.
“Savannah is stable and alert and getting the attention she needs,” the NWSL posted on X. “Our first priority is her health and safety. We are in close communication with Racing Louisville’s medical team. The NWSL remains committed to ensuring that the highest standards of medical care and emergency response are in place at every match.”
