December 9 – The FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2025 continues on Wednesday in Al-Rayyan, where Concacaf champions Cruz Azul meet Copa Libertadores winners Flamengo in a true Derby of the Americas.
Cruz Azul booked their ticket by winning the Concacaf Champions Cup, finishing with a record-tying seventh title after a 5–0 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
Flamengo, meanwhile, come in as freshly crowned Libertadores champions thanks to Danilo’s decisive strike against Palmeiras. They also wrapped up the Brazilian championship early, which gives them a luxury Cruz Azul simply doesn’t have – rest.
Even so, Flamengo’s leadership aren’t taking anything for granted. Executive José Boto said: “It’s going to be tough. You can’t underestimate anyone. Nowadays, all teams know each other well, and it’s necessary to enter with maximum concentration.”
Coach Filipe Luís echoed the caution. “For me, the toughest match is against Cruz Azul,” he said, even while acknowledging the lure of a possible showdown with Europe’s best. “We can beat anyone.”
The winner will play Egyptian club Pyramids for the chance to face Paris St-Germain in the final on December 17.
