May 7 – MFK Kosice have unveiled its plans to move to a new stadium under a project estimated to be worth €15 million. The Slovak side’s new stadium is expected to be completed in 2017.
Under the plan, the municipal authorities of Kosice will acquire an 85% stake in the company which will operate the stadium, while the club’s owner will obtain the remaining 15% of the shares.
Construction work on the new 9,080-capacity stadium is expected to be launched this year, according to Martin Petrusko, the deputy mayor of Kosice. The facility will be located on a land plot with a total space of close to 60,000 square metres.
In addition to the funds provided by the municipal authorities, the Slovak government will co-finance the project. The state authorities are to provide a non-refundable grant of €4 million.
MFK Kosice compete in the country’s top tier, the Fortuna Liga. The side is currently ranked eighth in the 12-team league.
