Konami’s eFootball returns to Nintendo handheld platform ahead of 2026 World Cup

March 4 – Konami is taking eFootball back on to a Nintendo platform. The Japanese game developers confirmed that ‘eFootball Kick-Off!’ will launch on June 3 as a £15.99 digital download exclusive for Nintendo Switch 2.

For a franchise built on the legacy of PES, it marks a strategic return to the handheld-console market at a time when distribution and audience diversification are central to football gaming’s commercial model.

An early purchase incentive underlines the intent to drive day-one uptake: buyers of the digital version will receive Lionel Messi as a playable character in World Tour mode. Pre-order timing is yet to be confirmed.

From a product perspective, the pitch is accessibility layered on to established brand equity. World Tour mode allows users to build a club side, recruit players through competition or in-game currency, and expand globally – a format aligned with long-tail engagement. An International Cup mode, due as a free post-release update, will tap into the four-year tournament cycle that mirrors primary partner FIFA’s flagship competition.

For the industry, the move is focused on platform positioning – Nintendo’s ecosystem reaches a different demographic profile to PlayStation and Xbox, particularly in younger and more casual segments.

eFootball’s presence on Switch 2 opens access to family-oriented and mobile-leaning users who may not otherwise enter the franchise. At £15.99, the pricing also signals volume strategy over premium positioning.

Launching ahead of a major international tournament in a massive market like North America provides a significant tailwind, especially with a free International Cup mode scheduled post-release.
