March 18 – Major League Soccer has suspended Ernst Tanner {pictured) without pay through June 1, 2026, after an independent investigation found he violated league standards of professional conduct.
Tanner, the sporting director of the Philadelphia Union, had been under scrutiny following allegations that he used sexist and anti-gay language in the workplace, along with reported racist comments about Black players, coaches, and referees. The complaints were initially filed with the league by the MLS Players Association (MLSPA).
MLS had previously investigated the claims but closed the case after failing to substantiate the allegations. However, the emergence of new information prompted the league to reopen the investigation, placing Tanner on administrative leave on November 19, 2025.
“Following the completion of an investigation conducted by the law firm Littler Mendelson, Major League Soccer has suspended Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner without pay through June 1, 2026,” the league said in a statement.
“Based on new information obtained during outside counsel’s independent review, the investigation substantiated violations of MLS policies and standards of professional conduct required of League and Club leadership.”
As part of the disciplinary measures, MLS confirmed Tanner must complete a league-approved restorative practices programme before any potential return.
Tanner joined Philadelphia in 2018 and signed a contract extension in 2021.
