New York City FC breaks ground on $780m Etihad Park

December 4 – Later today New York City FC will break ground on Etihad Park, its new 25,000 capacity stadium in Willets Point, Queens, that will be completed in time for the start of the 2027 season.

Collateral damage? Herdman steps down from Toronto FC as Canadian drone scandal casts long shadow

December 2 – Implicated in the Canadian drone-spying scandal that has already cost Canadian women’s coach Bev Priestman her job following the Paris Olympics, John Herdman has resigned as coach of Toronto FC, though his resignation has not been directly linked to that scandal.

MLS coaches caught in revolving doors as managers across the country are pink-slipped

November 27 – In the National Football League in the US, the last game of the regular season is known as ‘Black Monday’ as assorted coaches receive their pink slips. Major League Soccer does not have a true equivalent, however, Monday after the conference finals has proven to run ‘Black Monday’ close.

Caitlin Clark joins Cincinnati bid for NWSL franchise but winning is no slam dunk

November 26 – Women’s basketball sensation Caitlin Clark (pictured), who a season ago was playing college basketball and has just finished her first pro-season with the WNBA’s Indiana Fever, has joined the Cincinnati ownership group bidding to bring an NWSL franchise to the city.

November 25 – Inter Milan are expected to announce 40-year-old Javier Mascherano in the next 24 hours. The Argentine is currently the U20 coach of the national team and will reunite with his old Barcelona pals, Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez, and Sergio Busquets.
