June 14 – Brazil defeated a depleted Venezuela 3-0 in the curtain raiser of the Copa America, a tournament that was shifted away from both Colombia and Argentina at the eleventh hour but has still been badly hit by the coronavirus.

June 8 – Brazil won’t boycott the Copa America on home soil despite the team’s players expected release of a statement today (Tuesday) expressing their criticism at the way organisers and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) have pressed ahead with the tournament in the pandemic-stricken country.

June 2 – Brazil has confirmed Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Cuiaba and Goiania as the host cities for the 2020 Copa America in a fortnight’s time after both Argentina and Colombia were stripped of the hosting only for Jair Bolsonaro and Brazil, one of the epicenters of the global health crisis, to step in at the eleventh hour.

March 16 – Co-hosts Argentina will kick off the 2020 Copa America in Buenos Aires on June 13, with South American Football Confederation Conmebol releasing the competition’s new calendar after both invitees Australia and Qatar withdrew because of the coronavirus pandemic.

July 8 – José Luis Meiszner, the President of the Organising Committee of the 2011 Copa America, has said that the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires is not currently in a condition to host the final of the tournament but will be ready for the July 24 showpiece.

June 27 – With less than a week to go until the start of the Copa America, the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires, which was set to host the tournament’s final on July 24, has been forced to shut as a result of violence following River Plate’s shock relegation to the Nacional B Division.
