Massimo Cecchini: L’Europeo? E’ Uno Corsa Contro Il Tempo The Euros and a race against time

Ricordate i buoni propositi?

Conte farà bene a preoccuparsi.

Massimo Cecchini: The Euros and a race against time

Remember the laments at the end of the World Cup in Brazil? Remember the good intentions? “Never again will a shame like this happen: now we must all work to rebuild Italian football. “

Well, just six months after those beautifully rallying words (come to think of it, very similar to those heard after the South African World Cup 2010), they now sound like a speech by Julius Cesar from twenty centuries ago. All, or almost forgotten.

If you want further verification just ask the coach of the national team,

Antonio Conte, who has, for weeks, been (rightly) angry at the thought of having to prepare for the 2016 European French programme in just 19 days. Yes, you read that right: 19. All this because there is a strong current within the League Serie A that wants to conclude that the 2015-1016 season on May 22. That is, just 19 days before the beginning of Euro2016.

For some time Conte has complained privately that it is a paradoxical situation, if you think that since 1980 the European Championship wasn’t only contested with four finalists – never has the national team been granted so few days to prepare for the event.

Needless to say, if this were to happen, difficult questions would be asked, if you think that in Holland and England championships will end around May 8 and in Spain and Germany on May 15. Italy would be bringing up the rear of this group and perhaps of all the finalists. In short, it is no coincidence that Conti said that this national team fight ” is one against all”(League, media etc).

But hope is the last to die, and this is embodied by the offensive diplomacy that in a few days will pursue federation president Tavecchio, along with general manager Uva.

Conti lost the battle over preparation for the qualifying stages in February (the teams involved in European competition are not sure to release their players early to the national team, so better not count on Juve, Roma, Napoli, Inter, Fiorentina and Torino), before the general public uprising that came when news spread of the days of the quota players had for national duty. The chances that Conti would get help grew.

In short, at this point it may be that the championship will begin in mid-August or – alternatively – that the Christmas break is shorter, which would mean the Serie A season can close 15 May. Then Conte would have 26 days to prepare for the European Championships.

Will he succeed in getting what he wants? It remains to be seen. Since 1980 the average number of days that Italy has had to prepare for each of the big championships have been approximately 28 days. Therefore, if the rebirth of Italian football begins at the start of the Championship, you can imagine the real interest that catalyses the National Palace of real power (the Serie A league offices). Some advice? Conte would do well to worry about this.
