Liverpool close in on 30m Facebook mark while Instagram powers on

December 16 – Instagram continues to be the social media growth engine for Premier League clubs with new followers up by 376,700 over the past week, a 40% increase on the 273,100 rise the previous week. In contrast week-on-week growth of Twitter followers and Facebook like were down across the league.

New twitter followers increased by 228,100 this week compared to 234,300 last week, while the rate of Facebook growth was down by almost a third to 224,400 from 332,800.

Arsenal made a big impact in Instagram this week growing 69,200 new followers against 35,900 last week. But the club’s weekly Twitter growth dropped to 41,000 from 47,800 last week. Facebook growth was steady at 38,100 against 38,000 last week.

Liverpool are closing in on the 30 million Facebook ‘Likes’ mark and would be the fourth club to do so after Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

While there are 237.4 million Facebook ‘Likes’ across all clubs, 12 clubs have less than 2 million. Man Utd dominate the table with 71 million.

Instagram is closing in on Twitter in terms of total followers and can be expected to overtake the platform in terms of absolute Premier League numbers in the next few weeks. Instagram has 43.5 million followers in total compared to Twitter’s 45.3 million. This week Instagram grew by 150,000 more followers than Facebook.
