Social media: Man City surges rival Man Utd dominance but they don’t have the staying power

January 20 – The pattern of growth in Facebook Likes has been remarkable over the past five weeks as Manchester City had a growth of nearly 330,000 followers, nearly matching Manchester United’s 388,000 – on the face of it a major step forward for the blue side of the City.

However, it appears to have been a short lived phenomenon prompting questions to Man City that have so far been unanswered as to how it was achieved.

This week the social media stats have returned to a more normal pattern with Manchester United’s growth of 77,000 almost 50% greater than Chelsea’s growth of 41,900 and now third-placed Manchester City at 39,300.

Man City’s surges in growth have been seen before. In the week ending November 16, 2016, Man City showed the same pattern of remarkable growth with 154,000 new likes compared to Man Utd’s 74,000.

The 330,000 growth in the five week period mentioned above compares to Chelsea’s growth of 257,000 over the same time period and Arsenal’s 165,000.

Meanwhile the pattern of growth in the ranking of the first five teams has followed the normal trend on Twitter and Instagram. Manchester United’s dominance is as over-powering on social media as manager Jose Mourinho’s is when it comes to complaining about life in football, referees, his players and just about anything that bumps into his world.
