Excitement Index puts Barca as top team but Real vs Bayern as top match

April 21 – Nissan has released its latest Excitement Index findings that show reveal Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich was the most exciting Champions League match this season, but that overall Barcelona top the Excitement Index Team League.

Nissan’s Excitement Index was launched last season in partnership with Loughborough University. Fans are “fitted with wearable technology to monitor and gather data, including: heart rate, breathing rate and electro-dermal activity, to examine the physiological effect excitement has on them.”

This data is then matched with official match statistics from Opta to develop a scientific formula and a ranking.

Fans were fitted with wearable technology to monitor and gather data, including: heart rate, breathing rate and electro-dermal activity, to examine the physiological effect excitement has on them. This data was then combined with official match statistics from Opta to develop a scientific formula. The formula calculates an excitement score based on key match stats including: goal(s) scored (and when), involvement of star player(s), booking(s) and fan attendance.

Nissan is a sponsor of the Champions League and focuses the index on this competition. Real Madrid’s extra time 4-2 Quarter-Final win over Bayern head the table of individual matches so far though Barcelona have two matches in the top five, as do Manchester City.
