Gunning for an EU deal. Barnier wooed with Arsenal shirt

July 14 – A lighthearted example of sport and politics mixing saw Britain’s opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn bringing an unusual gift to the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier when the pair met for talks this week.

Corbyn, a lifelong Arsenal fan, handed Barnier an Arsenal jersey, symbolising the fact that the club are regular participants in Europe though, ironically, next season in the Europa league and not the Champions league.

In a cute charm offensive, the shirt had Barnier’s name on the back and Corbyn said his host was “very pleased” with the shirt, particularly as he knows Wenger well.
