Black and white error: BBC gaffe brands Newcastle as scum

Newcastle United

October 3 – Television viewers were somewhat alarmed to see a description of Newcastle United as “black and white scum” during a BBC highlights programme on Sunday night.

The Premier League side, who wear black and white, were victims of an unfortunate gaffe with the BBC falling foul of a subtitling error.

The match commentator was discussing Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge’s excellent goalscoring record against Newcastle but subtitling software misunderstood the word “comma” and inserted the word “scum” into the text on screen.

The Magpies are often branded scum by fans of north-east rivals Sunderland but this was the BBC.

A spokeswoman explained: “Our live subtitling service is normally very accurate and makes our content much more accessible, but there are times when unfortunate errors occur. On this occasion the error was spotted and corrected immediately.”
