Police find no evidence of crime in Barklay’s £15m move from Everton to Chelsea

January 17 – An investigation into claims by the mayor of Liverpool in the UK that there may have been fraud surrounding England midfielder Ross Barkley’s recent switch from Everton to Chelsea has failed to produce any evidence to that effect.

Last week, Joe Anderson, a lifelong Everton fan, wrote to the heads of the Football Association (FA) and Premier League following Barklay’s £15 million transfer suggesting the circumstances of the deal may have been dubious and “warrants serious investigation”.

Anderson wanted to know why the fee was so low for a player who was the subject of a £35 million bid from Chelsea last summer, only to pull out at the last moment.

But police say officers have found no evidence of a crime.  The force’s assistant chief constable has written to both organisations, stating police would look at the deal again if either found any wrongdoing during their own investigations.
