9 months in, social media campaign starts for prison release of former Barca boss Rosell

Sandro Rosell

March 8 – Colleagues of Sandro Rosell, once one of the most influential figures in European club football as the former president of Barcelona, have launched a social media campaign to request his release from jail after nine months of detention.

Rosell is being held under stark conditions following his arrest last year as part of a money laundering investigation that also involves former president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, Ricardo Teixeira.

According to Spanish reports, one of those campaigning for his release is Josep Maria Bartomeu who succeeded him as Barca president.

Rosell’s defence counsel, lawyer Pau Molins, has asked for his release up to six times, but the judge of the National Court, Carmen Lamela, has always opposed it because of a flight risk. Bail of €400,000 that Rosell’s father has reportedly offered to pay in exchange for the freedom of his son has also been turned down.
