Premier League focused on TV execs to replace Scudamore

October 18 – It is a sign of how far the football business has progressed to being part of the entertainment business that senior executives from the BBC and ITV have been shortlisted as the frontrunners to replace Richard Scudamore as chief executive of the Premier League, according to Sky.

Tim Davie, who runs BBC Studios and Tom Betts, ITV strategy director, are being reported as two names on a shortlist of three to run the world’s most affluent and globally televised footballing product.

The third member has not been identified but whoever takes over from Scudamore, who recently announced he is stepping down, will have a hard job matching his ability to raise income.

During Scudamore’s tenure, revenues for the 20 Premier League clubs from an average of £38.6 million per season in 1999-2000 to an average of £227.6m in the 2016-17 season, driven largely by the massive growth in the value of the league’s domestic and international media rights.

The preferred candidate to replace him is understood to be likely to referred to a meeting of the 20 clubs in mid-November.
