January 29 – South Sudan’s Football Association (SSFA) has revealed that the country’s national teams will stage all their international matches this year in Uganda’s capital Kampala.
Last week the SSFA held their ordinary general assembly in Juba, the country’s capital, and decided that South Sudan will shift their home internationals to neighbouring Uganda in 2019. In March South Sudan are schedule to host a game against Tunisia in a 2019 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches. The encounter also serves as an Olympic qualifier.
The SSFA wants to stage all other international this year in Kampala as well. This weekend reconstruction work on the national stadium in Juba commenced, but the facelift could take up to 2020 to complete.
FIFA and CAF had representatives in South Sudan’s capital to monitor the start of reconstruction, which benefits from FIFA development funding in the range of $800,000 to $1 million according to various reports.
In 2011 South Sudan gained independence from Sudan. They became a full FIFA member in 2012.
