LaLiga ‘unaware’ of rumours that Tebas is being lined up for Premier League role

February 21 – Spain’s La Liga has said it is “unaware”  of reports that its outspoken leader Javier Tebas (pictured) is among the potential candidates to take over the vacant role of English Premier League chief executive.

The Premier League has been searching for a replacement for Richard Scudamore after broadcasting executive Susanna Dinnage turned down the job and BBC commercial and production chief Tim Davie rejected overtures.

La Liga said it did not expect Tebas to jump ship to England with a number of key issues facing the Spanish league.

“We are not aware of this supposed interest,” a LaLiga spokesman said. “Javier has a contract with LaLiga and not only is he happy here, he also has responsibilities and challenges which occupy his full attention.

“This includes the changing broadcast landscape and battling the threat of new competitions including format changes that put domestic leagues at risk.”

Tebas, 56, has frequently made headlines for controversial remarks and ideas, describing Europe’s wealthiest clubs who try to circumvent financial fair rules as being guilty of “financial doping” and driving the ultimately aborted attempt to play one Spanish top-flight league fixture per year overseas.

The first of those games was supposed to be in Miami between Barcelona and Girona last month but fell through.

The Spanish top flight is second only to the Premier League in terms of commercial revenue for a domestic football league. Tebas has previously been offered the opportunity to take over Italy’s Serie A, but decided to stay in Spain. A move to the UK could prove tricky as he doesn’t speak English.
