Black is the new black. UEFA sharpens up its refs for club finals with new Macron deal

May 24 – Referees and their assistants at next week’s Europa League final will have smart new kit to wear under a new deal signed between Macron and UEFA.

The Italian kit manufacturer has agreed a three-year deal taking them through to 2022 to provide referee uniforms for all UEFA competitions. The will be designated the official UEFA Referee Match Kit Supplier. The Bologna based company since 2017 has the official partner of UEFA for the Top Executive Programme Kit Assistance Scheme, the project designed to assist the smaller football federations.

“We are delighted to have Macron on board as UEFA’s new referee kit supplier for the next three years,” said UEFA’s chief refereeing officer Roberto Rosetti.

“This is a company that is always pushing the boundaries to come up with the latest innovations to ensure that referees feel as comfortable as possible when undertaking such an important and high-pressured role on the field of play.”

And for the refs it seems that black is the new black – but with what for some might be a challenging slim-fit cut. A UEFA press release said: “The new jerseys preserve the traditional colours sported by referees: black, neon yellow, neon blue and neon pink. The front of the shirt has a striped design with black details on the crewneck and the sleeve edges (except for the solid black version), and it is accessorised with comfortable front pockets.

“Black shorts accompany all four tops, and the socks echo the colours of the jerseys, interrupted by one black horizontal stripe bearing the Macron Hero logo.  The jerseys have a slim-fit cut, while the micromesh inserts allow maximum breathability.”
