August 21 – Concacaf has moved swiftly to relocate two Concacaf League round of 16 matches scheduled to be played in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, to the northern city of San Pedro Sula following fan violence at the weekend that saw three at least three people were killed and 10 injured, three critically.
The violence took place in Tegucigalpa before a fixture between the Motagua FC and CD Olimpia clubs. Fans intercepted and vandalised a bus transporting Motagua players. Players were injured in the attack, some needing hospital treatment.
The match was immediately called off with 10,000 fans already in the stadium. Police said that gunfire had killed the victims with seven more injured. One fan was stabbed.
Motagua were in action last night in Nicaragua in the first leg of their Concacaf League round of 16 match tie against Managua FC, winning 2-1. They will now play the second leg in a closed stadium in San Pedro Sula at the Olympic Stadium behind closed doors.
Olimpia play the first leg of their round of 16 tie against Canada’s Hamilton Forge this Thursday, before also returning for the second leg in the Olympic Stadium San Pedro Sula on August 29, that tie also to be played behind closed doors.
In a statement Conacaf said: “The decision, aimed at guaranteeing the safety of the participating clubs, officials and fans, has been taken by the Concacaf Council following the incidents and serious breaches of security that took place on Saturday, August 17th, prior to a domestic league match between the two Honduran clubs that was scheduled to be played in the Tiburcio Carías Andino Stadium in Tegucigalpa.”
