European Leagues boss Olsson says transfer window closing needs to be aligned

October 9 – The European summer transfer window should close at the same time everywhere as used to be the case, according to the head of the European Leagues.

Two years ago, the early summer close of the English transfer window was introduced to minimise squad disruption at the start of the season.  This summer the Premier League window closed on August 8, whereas France, Germany and Italy closed theirs on September 2.

The idea was to make it easier for managers to plan but the initiative became counter-productive, with  a number of Premier League players leaving for Europe after the English season had begun.

“It would be better to have all the windows aligned,” Lars-Christer Olsson (pictured), head of the European Leagues, told Sky.

“It’s a domestic decision and it has to be agreed in a proper way and everybody has to agree if it’s going to happen.

“I have no opinion about the date itself because it has to be discussed in connection with different competitions. If I look into the overall system, I think it would make sense that they are aligned.”
