Mediapro rejects Super Cup in Saudi leaving RFEF struggling to find Spanish TV partner

November 11 – Mediapro is the latest broadcaster to turn its back the Spanish SuperCup as a result of the Spanish FA’s (RFEF) decision to move the event  to Saudi Arabia in a €130 million deal.

The first edition of the revamped tournament in Saudi Arabia – featuring Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Valencia – is due to be played in Jeddah in January 2020 and last week state broadcaster RTVE said it will not bid for the TV rights due to human rights concerns.

Mediapro has now followed suit  saying it would “never tolerate a sports competition to be taken to a country like Saudi Arabia where human rights are violated.”

It now appears highly unlikely the tournament will have a domestic broadcaster for the Super Cup after both Atresmedia and Mediaset also declined to bid, a hugely awkward scenario for the federation given the four teams involved and their respective fan bases.
