Concacaf add U-17 women and mens Futsal to list of suspended championships

March 20 – Concacaf has decided to suspend two more national teams tournament in light of the spread of Covid-19 within the region.

The 2020 Concacaf Women’s Under-17 Championships, originally scheduled for April 18 to May 3 in Toluca, Mexico and the 2020 Concacaf Futsal Championships, originally scheduled for May 1 to May 10 in Guatemala will be arranged though no date has been set.

“Both competitions require significant international travel for a number of our Member Associations and their teams and we have made this decision with their welfare in mind,” said a Concacaf press release.

Last week Concacaf announced the suspension of the 2020 Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship, from March 20-April 1 in Guadalajara, Mexico; the 2020 Concacaf Champions League; 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup Qualifiers (due to be played in the March 2020 FIFA Window), and 2020 Concacaf Caribbean Club Shield.

“Concacaf is committed to working with key stakeholders to consider options to reconvene our competitions at an appropriate time in the future,” the Confederation said in a statement.

Of most pressing concern will be the Olympic qualifiers and finding a date and place where they can be played safely and completed in time for the Tokyo games that are scheduled to start July 24.
