Kenyan FA on brink as FIFA and government bang heads

April 1 – Kenyan football is reportedly in danger of being suspended by FIFA with April 6 being touted as the date when the ongoing crisis reaches its denouement. That is when talks are supposed to take place between the Ministry of Sports, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and FIFA.

Last week FIFA over-ruled a local judgement that threw out the national federation’s entire executive. The Sports Disputes Tribunal had ruled that the current Kenyan Football Federation (FKF) regime were in office illegally and had to vacate as their term had ended.

The tribunal also called for a formation of a normalisation committee to undertake FKF’s roles including organising fresh elections. But FIFA intervened by quashing the ruling and stating the judgement was not legally binding, reinstating the FKF Executive Committee including the current president Nick Mwendwa (pictured).

The federation is now reported to be increasingly anxious about whether the protracted election battle pitting the current FKF executives against other aspirants could result in a ban though there have been no published threats as yet.
