Coronavirus: Spurs and Wembley lose NFL hosting as league moves matches back to US

May 5 – Tottenham Hotspur and Wembley have both lost two NFL matches they were set to host in London this autumn with the US major league announcing it has cancelled the four regular season games and switching them back to the US.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, owned by Fulham owner Shahid Khan were scheduled for two games at Wembley, with two more matches due to be played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

NFL UK managing director Alistair Kirkwood said: “The NFL’s London Games have become a major part of the NFL season and the UK sports calendar.

“But the uncertainty in the current sporting landscape and the tremendous amount of long-term travel and planning required to stage successful London games mean this is the sensible decision to make.”

Spurs’ new stadium had been built with the capacity to host NFL games with the league having contributed £10 million to the build.

The news is a financial blow to both Spurs and the English Football Association who are paid a fee to host and share in merchandising and hospitality revenues. It is estimated they could lose upwards of £4 million.

The NFL has also cancelled a regular season game scheduled for Mexico City’s iconic Azteca Stadium.
