Nice play safe and keep doors closed despite new rules allowing fans back into stadia

August 13 – Nice have decided to play their opening match in France’s top league behind closed doors when the new season gets under way despite being allowed to have up to 5,000 fans at the game.

The season is set to start on Friday August 21 and Patrick Vieira’s side are to host Lens two days later.

France re-opened stadiums for up to 5,000 spectators from July 11 as part of the country lifting coronavirus restrictions. But with Covid-19 cases back on the rise, Nice are taking no chances.

“We are of course disappointed that the current events have led us to this point,” said Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere.

“We hope that this precautionary measure will not affect the passion of our supporters. But rather, show them that we want to look after them.”
